Bring marketing in while the product is still taking shape

Talk about positioning and launch only after the product is finished, and the core questions are already hard to change.

The product decides whether you have something to sell. Marketing decides whether the market understands it, accepts it and finally pays for it. Product creates the value; marketing finds it, defines it, delivers it and turns it into revenue. In the end users decide what it is worth, in the situations where they actually use it.

Marketers spend their days looking at user behavior, conversion, content feedback, ad data and competitors. That gives them a feel for what users care about and which value proposition people grasp fastest. They also know which needs competitors already cover, and which things look impressive but rarely convert. A high click-through rate on an ad shows it caught attention; it says little about lasting demand. A feature many people ask about may still be one nobody pays for.

Those signals belong in the product while it is still taking shape. If positioning, go-to-market and promotion only come up once the product is finished, the core problems are hard to change, and marketing is mostly left polishing the message, the channels and the conversion.

So bring someone who really understands marketing into the product early. A bit more market judgment up front makes the launch much easier. As products get built faster, a wrong call about the market can cost more than the code. Our aim is to help shape a product that is easier to sell from the first version.
