What is AEO SEO?
AEO SEO is the work of making a page answer a question clearly enough that an answer engine can use it. AEO stands for answer engine optimization. The output may be an AI summary, a voice answer or a cited paragraph inside ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI features.
It is not a separate index. The page still needs to be crawlable, fast enough and clear about its topic. What changes is the unit you optimize: a complete answer rather than a keyword placed in a title.
Why the bare word AEO is a trap in Hong Kong
On 18 October 2026, a Hong Kong search for aeo returned American Eagle Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Customs Authorised Economic Operator programme, the EU customs programme, DHL's logistics dictionary, a US stock quote and the WCO compendium. No result was about marketing.
The acronym carries at least three meanings in this market. A page that targets it alone competes with a clothing retailer and a customs scheme. Use AEO SEO, AEO 是什麼, AEO 優化 or answer engine optimization. The extra word costs nothing and removes the ambiguity.
What does an answer engine read?
It reads the same page a search engine reads. The difference is how much it can lift. A paragraph that answers one question in two or three sentences is easier to quote than a page that circles the topic for a thousand words.
- A heading that repeats the question in plain language.
- A direct answer in the first sentence under that heading.
- Facts with units, dates and names, not adjectives.
- Tables for comparisons and steps for processes.
- A date and an author a reader can check.
Does AEO need a special schema?
Google says its AI search features use the same foundations as Search and do not require special AI markup. FAQPage markup can produce a rich result when the questions and answers are visible on the page. It is not a shortcut into an AI answer.
Add structured data when it describes something real: an article, a service, a product, a question a customer asked. Do not invent questions to fill a schema block. A page with twenty invented FAQs reads worse to a person and gives a machine nothing worth quoting.
How do you measure AEO?
Pick five to ten prompts a buyer would actually type. Run them in the engines you care about, in the market and language you sell in. Record the answer, the links and the date.
Count a mention and a citation separately. A mention says the brand appeared. A citation says the answer linked to the domain. Neither is a ranking, and one run is not a baseline. Repeat the set on the same day each month and keep the raw text.
Common questions
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Mostly. AEO usually describes answer engines and direct answers. GEO usually describes generative engines and citation inside a generated answer. The page work overlaps heavily, so one page can serve both.
Do I need an AI-specific file?
No. Google says its AI features do not require a special file or markup. A clear page, crawler access and accurate facts matter more.
Can AEO replace SEO?
No. AI features draw on the same index and the same quality signals. Work that damages search visibility tends to damage answer visibility too.
What should I fix first?
Crawler access, one clear H1, a canonical URL and a visible answer near the top. Then measure before rewriting the rest of the site.
How many prompts are enough?
Start with five that map to real buying questions. Five prompts run every month tell you more than fifty run once.
