UTM Naming for a Multi-Channel Product Launch

Build a small campaign naming system for Reddit, Threads, X, YouTube and Instagram, then check that visits appear in your analytics.

What should the campaign link record?

A campaign link should identify where you shared it and which campaign it belongs to. Use source for the platform, medium for the channel type and campaign for the shared initiative. Add content when you need to distinguish two versions.

For an example launch, source=reddit, medium=social and campaign=autumn_launch separate the platform from the campaign. A content value such as founder_demo distinguishes a demo from a written guide.

How do you keep names consistent?

Choose a spelling once and reuse it. Our builder trims names, lowercases them and replaces spaces with underscores so the same campaign is less likely to split across several rows. This is a naming choice for this tool, not a requirement imposed by every analytics system.

Use the platform presets as a starting point. Change the medium when the placement is paid. Export the link record before you hand it to another person.

How do you know tracking works?

Open a test link on a website with analytics installed and inspect the resulting acquisition data. Google Analytics can report the campaign parameters attached to incoming visits. A generated URL alone does not install analytics or prove the event arrived.

Check that any redirects preserve the parameters. Then record the destination action you care about, such as a successful tool run. Keep test visits out of your growth claim.

What should you leave out of tags?

Use campaign labels that another teammate can understand. Keep customer names, email addresses and private notes out of URLs. URLs can be copied, logged and shared beyond the intended audience.

Keep normal internal navigation links clean. Your own guides can link directly to a tool while you measure that interaction with a separate event.
