What does a Shopify store need for SEO?

Shopify handles the basics. What breaks is usually collection copy, variant URLs and market settings.

Score a Shopify store

The score is the share of weighted checks that pass. It covers store settings and theme output, not the quality of the product photography or the ad account.

Where Shopify SEO usually breaks

Product pages are mostly fine out of the box: titles, prices and structured data are generated for you. The problems collect in three places. Collection pages have no copy. Variants create near-duplicate URLs. Market settings create language and currency versions that point at each other badly, or not at all.

None of those is fixed by installing another app. Each is a decision about what should be indexed and what should not.

Collections are the pages that can rank

A product page answers a narrow query. A collection page can answer a category query, which usually has more searches and more commercial intent. That only works when the collection has an introduction that explains the choice, a sensible order, and links to the pages a buyer needs next.

Filtered collection URLs are the other half of the job. Colour, size and price filters can multiply one collection into hundreds of near-identical pages. Most stores should keep filters out of the index and make sure the unfiltered page is the one Google sees.

Markets, languages and hreflang

A Hong Kong store selling to Hong Kong, Taiwan and overseas usually ends up with several language and currency versions. Each version needs its own URL, a canonical that points to itself, and hreflang that links the set both ways.

Currency-only variants are the usual trap. Two URLs that show the same products in different currencies are duplicates unless the content genuinely differs.

Questions before you use it

Is Shopify good for SEO?

The basics are handled: clean URLs, sitemaps and product structured data. Ranking still depends on collection copy, internal links and the pages you choose to publish.

Should I index filtered collection pages?

Usually no. Filters create many near-identical URLs. Index the unfiltered collection and keep the filtered versions out unless a filter combination is a real category with its own demand.

Do variant URLs hurt SEO?

They can. Multiple URLs for the same product split signals and waste crawl budget. Keep one canonical product URL and let the variant selector work on that page.

How should a Hong Kong store handle English and Chinese?

Give each language its own URL through Shopify Markets, set a self-referencing canonical on each, and check that hreflang links both ways.

Does removing an app break SEO?

It can, when the app created pages or redirects that are now gone. Check Search Console for new 404s after removing an app.
